OUR STORY:
Matt & Bama’s started with a bland-ass taco.
Living in Los Angeles, the land of tacos, there was no excuse for using gummy, additive-laden spice packets to make Angeleno-worthy tacos at home. My daughter was fed up with my complaining and suggested we make our own seasoning. So, we did.
We started hand-blending small batches of aromatic herbs and spices, forging them together with meats, veggies, fire, and oil. Taco Night was our first success and friends and family craved more. They pushed us to create new seasonings to turn every-week grocery staples into “Lets have that again!” dinner nights. Even the leftovers became a prized possession.

Identity
Matt & Bamas is an artisan product with a utility designed to alleviate dinner-prep anxiety for busy people. We used a bold type-based logo form, individual colors that reflected the essence of each seasoning blend, and a typeface with great legibility in small print. This clean, breathable approach provides quick readability and ease of use.
Packaging
For ease of use and measurement, each seasoning blend pouch is portioned as single serve. We designed a color-coded identity system for each blend in stand-up, resealable pouches so they wouldn’t get lost in a cabinet or drawer. Since the blends are handmade in small batches, the laminated craft paper material and hand applied labels support their overall artisan handcrafted look and feel. The labels are playful and informative for quick use when the pressure is on in the kitchen.
Distribution
We used clean, negative space when building the website to provide focus and engagement on the products and their attributes.
Results
Since its opening in the winter of 2021, 1861 Market has grown one of the largest word-of-mouth, loyal customer bases in all of central New Mexico. It continuously receives five star ratings on Google, Weedmaps, and Leafly and is solidly known for its knowledgeable, friendly staff, consistent inventory, and value.
