To honor the diverse and complicated legacy of The Emancipation Proclamation, the U.S. National Archives created an annual once-a-year showing of the original document in an exhibit at the National Archives Museum. Figure originated a public awareness campaign across multiple platforms.

The Emancipation Proclamation represents something that all Americans are connected to, the long evolution of building a better union.  We researched the motivations, opinions, and struggles of African Americans from the enactment of the Emancipation Proclamation through the Jim Crow the civil rights eras, to the election of President Obama.

We brought forward images and words of civil rights pioneers that remain as relevant today as they were when they were recorded to contemporize the continued struggle for equality with a modern audience.  And through video and social media, we added the public’s reaction to the exhibit to continue the conversation.
