The Laguna Beach Family Resource Center is a first-of-its-kind joint service partnership between the Laguna Beach Unified School District and SchoolPower, the Laguna Beach Schools Foundation. Public education is expected to provide a constantly growing number of services to a rapidly evolving group of people. That makes it hard for schools to maintain a brand consistency across the numerous service touch points students, parents, and the public come into contact with. In discovery. we worked with LBUSD and SchoolPower to identify common education barriers and develop audience personas to back our creative approach. Our workshop process helped remove clutter and get down to the most essential and accessible messaging and visual elements needed to engage parents at the new center.

To address this issue in their own community, they partnered with SchoolPower to consolidate a patchwork of existing support services into a single, more accessible place known as the Family Resource Center. Today, it continues to serve as a vibrant hub dedicated to building LBUSD family engagement by providing community activities, confidential counseling, and support services for student success.
WHAT WE DO
We build family engagement for academic success through every step of the student journey. It begins by offering a safe, welcoming space for LBUSD families to confidentially share their needs. Needs that are compassionately assessed and quickly addressed with community activities, confidential counseling, and support services. Examples of our efforts begin before families enter school with our early education programs that lay the groundwork for successful, lifelong learning. Elementary school families can find help supporting healthy learning habits and social interaction through our after- school programs and parent learning opportunities. Robust counseling support helps our middle school families as they navigate rapid social and emotional changes. Finally, our counseling and additional service support continues for high school families as they prepare for college, careers, and early adulthood. These examples are part of a wide range of prevention, intervention, and enrichment services the center provides to ensure student success for all LBUSD families.

Identity
Inspired by the family togetherness of nesting dolls, we created an encompassing character set of nesting lowercase letter shapes that represent the comfort and support the center provides. It is simple, elegant, and approachable with multiple tones that imply inclusivity and diversity. A foundational peacock blue forms the anchor of our colorway. Seaglass green and a punchy, cheerful sunflower yellow accent round out the set evoking the traditional terrain, flora, and marine colors of the Laguna Beach area. Finally, the range of type weights available in Outfit gave us a universal typographic identity, easy availability, and web use flexibility.
Brand Standards
We built a brand guide complete with usage rules and web accessibility standards to ensure a messaging and visual consistency not just at the center but also across the school district.
Website
We built a light, single page site that quickly provides retainable information and funnels parents to email requests for information.
Collateral
We deployed the branding through a variety of assets including photo shoots, print and digital design, email, and social media awareness.
